Martine Syms

Martine Syms is an LA-based artist, while Kimberly Drew is an independent curator living and working in New York. But a sense of place is almost impertinent. Both consider the interplay between our digital and physical selves, shifting between each space, as they explore art and identity. On the eve of Syms’ latest exhibition opening, they dial back from both media, and connect via telephone.

Label Feature: Idle Hands

From dubstep to house and techno, Bristol-based record label Idle Hands has been shaping the sound of its city since 2009 – the year its founder, Chris Farrell, first released music by Peverelist, one of Bristol’s dubstep originators. The artist and Farrell worked together at the now-defunct store Rooted Records and came up with the idea to launch a record label that reflected the nascent sounds of dubstep appearing in Bristol’s vibrant music scene...

Artist Feature: Illa J

When Detroit native John Derek Yancey, better known as Illa J, released his third album, Home, in 2017 on the Cologne/Berlin-based label Jakarta, it was partly an act of self-affirmation for the rapper-slash-singer. As the younger brother of hip hop legend J Dilla, who tragically passed away in 2006, the 32-year-old artist has spent much of his career in the shadow of his illustrious sibling – even playing a bit-part role in Slum Village after Dilla’s death.

Soul Skate Documentary

Since 2007, Kenny Dixon Jr, better known as the DJ and producer Moodymann has been hosting skate parties in Detroit. Dubbed “Soul Skate,” this biennial event is the pinnacle of parties for this burgeoning – but largely unknown – subculture of rollerskating fanatics. All year round, they travel the country attending similar but smaller parties. Dixon Jr, however, plays a low-key role — demurring to his Soul Skate team, who host the event and with whom he travels to skate. This one, he says, is about Detroit and those with a love of skating.
